Understanding the Need

Every day, we hear stories of NFL players suffering from concussions, broken bones and torn ligaments. Despite having modern helmets, medical care and new safety precautions in place, players still face severe danger.

Now let’s rewind 20, 30, 40 years. The situation is much worse for many retired NFL players. Those who helped build, shape and mold the NFL into what it is today are paying the price physically, mentally and emotionally from their on-the-field efforts as an NFL player. Many of these players are not covered, or are not adequately covered, by an NFL pension or NFLPA benefits. They are faced with insurmountable medical costs and have nowhere to go for help.

Today, many retired NFL players find themselves with physical limitations, severe medical issues and other hardships. A substantial number of these former players are unable to pay for the treatments needed to provide some relief from their football-related injuries. They lack adequate disability, rehabilitation, health insurance and retirement programs to allow for, and maintain a quality of life and financial security for themselves and their families.

Some of these older players, who have given so much to the game during their NFL careers, often feel embarrassed by their predicament, becoming hopeless, living in loneliness and isolation, desperate for help. Read their stories.

The Good News

In just a few years, the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund (GGAF) has given more than $3,000,000 in grants and medical assistance to retired NFL players. The requests and needs continue to come in from retired NFL players asking for help, guidance and assistance. More work needs to be done to help retired NFL players in need.

Whether you are here to support financially or as a fan, there are many ways to help.
